- This feast commemorates St. George's martyrdom in 303 AD. He was a member of the Praetorian Guard for Roman Emperor Diocletian. After openly professing his Christian faith in front of Emperor Diocletian and tearing up an imperial edict that ordered the persecution of Christians, he was subjected to several days of brutal torture, before his beheading.
- Friday, 5/8, Martyrdom of St. Mark the Evangelist
- St. Mark the Evangelist was martyred in Alexandria, Egypt, in 68 A.D. after a pagan mob seized him during a church service and tied ropes around his neck to a horse's tail and dragged him through the streets of Alexandria for two days until his body was torn to pieces.
